Hola Amigos! It’s almost Cinco de Mayo, so that means nothing less than taco- burrito and tequilatime! I can already hear you stressing over the fact in which place you should stuff your face with all the taco’s, but there is no need to panic, with this list of top Mexican restaurants in New York. Head over to the second half of this post if you want even more convenience, since all the restaurants in the last section have this super handy link to the OpenTable NYC restaurants page, with which you can seal the reservation deal in the blink of an eye.

Mexican Spots Throughout the City
  • Los Tacos No. 1 @ 75 9th Avenue, Manhattan
    • Being a hidden treasure inside of Chelsea Market, this Mexican spot is a must-go-to. The menu got me drooling like a hungry dog, especially over the Quesadilla Pollo Asado (grilled chicken quesadilla). Pro: prices are real friendly, so you’d better stock up on some taco’s here.
  • Tulcingo del Valle @ 665 10th Avenue, Hells Kitchen, Manhattan
    • This kick-ass restaurant offers everything you would expect at a Mexican place. I mean: tortas, cemitas, tacos, tostadas, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas. You name it, they have it. My personal favorite about this spot are the breakfast burrito’s! What better way to start the day, than with a burrito breaky?!

Mexican Restaurants in New York - Gran Electrica

  • Gran Eléctrica @ 5 Front Street, Dumbo, BK
    • If their supercute website (with hipsterskulls and helicopters) does not do the trick, the food will. The Albondigas de Borrego for example, is a delicious platter with amish lamb, mint, stewed tomato & morita chile, queso anejo and tortillas. Get ready to roll home! Must-do: if you fancy a little fiesta in the near future, you should defo consider hosting a cocktail party in here.
  • Barrio Chino @ 253 Broome Street, Manhattan
    • Even if you don’t like Mexican food, this place is worth a visit. The spot was used as the decor for Serena Van Der Woodsen to have some flashbacks about stumbling out of a bar drunk and bumping into Dan. In for more Gossip Girl spots? Here’s the solution!

Mexican Restaurants in New York - Chavelas

  • Chavela’s @ 736 Franklin Avenue, Brooklyn
    • This cute little colorful place in BK, offer a whole lot of Cinco de Mayo madness. Foodwise that is (the Torta Milanesa got me going). Make sure to get a drink from the brilliant cocktail menu. Shht: happy hour Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 PM. That means 1 dollar off tacos, a cerveza for $4, Micheladas $5, Sangrias $6 and Margaritas $7.
  • Tehuitzingo @ 695 10th Avenue, Hells Kitchen, Manhattan
    • A LOT of choice here. The Albongidas En Salsa De Chipotle Con Papas sounds real appealing though. Come on, Mexican style meatballs with Chipotle Sauce and Potatoes doesn’t do it for you?! Gently on the wallet as well.
  • Casa Enrique @ 5-48 49th Avenue, Long Island City
    • I’d go there for the Mexican Chocolate Pot De Creme alone. This dessert must be an invention of Mexican God and Chocolate God, ’cause this sounds like heaven. Awesome: this Michelin star rated (2015) restaurant has got an ONLINE ordering system! (which exludes the Mexican Chocolate Pot, so you should still get your lazy ass over there)

Mexican Restaurants in New York - Mesa Coyoacan

  • Mesa Coyoacan @ 372 Graham Avenue, Brooklyn
    • Situated in Brooklyn, this place claims to be an Autentica Cocina Mexicana. Sounds legit to me. The dishes look utmost delicious and, even more important, the tequila menu does so as well. With a mainly red and brownish interior, this restaurant has a very cosy feel to it.
  • Cascabel Taqueria @ 1556 2nd Avenue, UES, Manhattan
    • Famous for its outstanding Mexican Street Food, this spot is like summer on a New York street corner. Fav: They have Monday Taco Madness (all you can eat tacos for 90 minutes) and Bottomless Brunches on Saturdays and Sundays. Loving the side dish section (quinoa, cebollina, batatas fritas etc.) on the menu as well!
  • Dos Toros @ All Over New York City
    • While you’re at it, you should probably try a taco or two at this New York empire. Although almost being like a super chain, Dos Toros offers some of the nicest Mexican comfort food in the City. With locations at the Upper East Side, Battery Park, Maiden Lane, West Village, Union Square, 23rd & Park Avenue, 45th & Lexington Avenue, 54th & Lexington Avenue  Downtown Brooklyn and Williamsburg, this one is hard to miss.
  • Tortilleria Nixtamal @ 104-05 47th Avenue, Corona, Long Island
    • Worth the Long Island bound trip, ’cause HELLO, why wouldn’t you eat loads of Mexican food in a hood that’s named after Mexico’s #1 beerbrand?!
Mexican Restaurants in New York with Direct Reservation Links
  • Toloache @ Several Locations Throughout the City
    • Toloache has 3 different Mexican restaurants in New York. Situated in the Theatre District (251 West 50th Street), Upper East Side (166 East 82nd Street) and the West Village (205 Thompson Street), this chain is well represented throughout the City. Go to the UES to enjoy a nice Mexican dinner, since the other two locations are only for lunch. Lots of deliciousness on the menu, I suggest one of the Julian Medina signature dishes though. Get a table right now!

Mexican Restaurants in New York - La Esquina

  • La Esquina @ 114 Kenmare Street, Manhattan
    • Being one of the first Mexican restaurants in New York I discovered, this one HAD to be on this list. It might not surprise you, there’s already a post about La Esquina up on the blog, so more info about the restaurant can be found here. Reserve, already!
  • Tacombi @ NoLIta (267 Elizabeth Street), Flatiron (30 West 24th Street), 225 Bleecker Street
    • As much as I am in lalala-love with the interior of this great Mexican place, the food does some kind of trick for me as well (POLLO QUESADILLA! POLLO QUESADILLA!). Get a spot!

Mexican Restaurants in New York - Rosa Mexicana

  • Rosa Mexicano @ Tribeca (41 Murray Street), 61 Columbus Avenue, Union Square (9 East 18th Street) & 1063 1st Avenue
    • More like an institution when it comes to Mexican restaurants in New York. Colorful tacos fill all the tables. Fiesta: There’s a special Cinco de Mayo menu. That’s what I’m talking about! Try one (or a pitcher, OMG they DO serve pitchers!) of the signature pomegranate margaritas alongside your wonderful selections from the special Cinco de Mayo 3-Course Dinner Menu they put together. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo @ Rosa Mexicano!
  • Cosme @ 35 East 21st Street, Flatiron District, Manhattan
    • This place combines authentic Mexican food with local ingredients of the Hudson Valley. It’s pretty upscale, and therefore does not suit the typical Mexican restaurant stigma. You know, crappy, small, crowded places. Cosme is pretty popular, so make sure you book a table in time!

Mexican Restaurants in New York - The Black Ant

  • The Black Ant @ 60 2nd Avenue, East Village, Manhattan
    • The Black Ant, or La Hormiga Negro, as the Mexicans would say, is probably one of the press’ favorites when it comes to Mexican restaurants in New York. No wonder, with special dishes like Enchiladas de Conejo and Enchapulinados on their menu. Like any real Mexican place, they have happy hours as well! Not convinced? Take a look at their tequila menu and you’ll need a reservation asap!
  • Empellon Cocina @ 105 1st Avenue, East Village, Manhattan
    • Another place with a GREAT Cinco de Mayo menu. You’ll choose five courses from a special set menu. Pistachio guac (God is real I think) for the table is included. You know what time it is! Book-o-clock!
