Urban Picks September 2016: Amsterdam Edition

New name, new concepts. From now on, each first Thursday of the month we will present to you our Urban Picks. Loosely translated, this means: nice, fun and delicious things (to do) in the city. Some of them are oriented on a specific city, other will be to the benefits of everyone. Nevertheless, we will always try to mix things up and include a little of several categories (eg. food, film, books, festivals, party, series, restaurants, art and more). This month, we’ll try to add a little bit of that Amsterdam flava-flav.

1. Urban Picks Movie: The Secret Life of Pets

The Secret Life of Pets is a classic case of seems-like-a-kids-flick-but-is-not-necessarily-one. The movie is not only incredibly endearing, it’s also good fun and full of seriously cute animations. If you haven’t seen this one, than please go do so, because – I promise – you will be entertained very much by the voices of Louis C.K. (YAS), Eric Stonestreet (Cam from Mitch and Cam, Modern Family) and Kevin Hart (who basically stars as himself, since he too is kind of a small and cute but very tough bunny). If this all does not yet sound to good to be true, then wait for it: The Secret Life of Pets has the most awesome animations of …. TUN TUN TUNNNN … New York City!

Amsterdam Theatre Suggestion: Pathé Tuschinski

2. Read: Behold the Dreamers

Debut of writer Imbolo Mbue about two New York immigrants who are trying to find their way around the City and through life. This book is – according to The New York Times – one of those rare novels that will change the way you see the world. Well, we’re all for that so let’s get reading!

3. Last Chance: Amy Winehouse – A Family Portrait

You’ll need to be quick to catch this exhibition at the Joods Historisch Museum in time (runs until September 4th), but please make sure you do, because on this one you’re not gonna want to miss out. We all know the story of the sweet Jewish girl gone bad, there’s no news in that department. What so special then? Well, just keep in mind that everything you see is treasured and collected by Amy’s brother, and you will not fail to tear up within the first five minutes of entering the museum.

4. Series: Narcos

Kingpin time! We have been waiting a very long time for it, but finally Pablo is back. Get ready for 7 more hours of outstanding acting of Wagner Moura and his entourage. Still a little curious about how long this season will manage to stay interesting (having the real-life story in mind).

5. New in Town: The Breakfast Club Wibautstraat

Our favorite meal of the day is breakfast. So, how happy were we when the East-side of Amsterdam got enlightened with a brand new Breakfast Club? Well, very. Open now for a good week and a half, we suggest you go and try the pancakes on their always sunny terrace.

6. Urban Picks Food: All Butter Pistachio and Almond Cookies

Not often do we go splurge all our money on groceries, but when we do it’s at Marks and Spencer. And holy shit, did we discover the best cookies ever: All Butter Pistachio and Almond Cookies. Not so much Dutch heritage, all the more deliciousness. Which makes up for everything. Duh.
